1,140,005. Extracting protein. ASTRA NUTRITION A.B. 5 April, 1967 [7 April, 1966], No. 15669/67. Heading C3H. [Also in Division C5] A process for recovering the constituents of organic material containing oil, proteins, nucleotides and insoluble tissue material, comprises treating the organic material in comminuted form with an alkaline medium of.pH not greater than 12 in the presence of CaSP++/SP in amount 3À5-17À5 g. CaSP++/SP per kg. of organic material at a temperature not greater than 40‹ C. for a time sufficient to extract the protein without substantial degradation thereof and liberate the oil, the resulting mixture forming three phases, namely an oil phase, a sludge phase and an intermediate phase containing the extracted protein; separating these phases one from another and precipitating the protein from the phase containing it. Calcium may be supplied to the organic medium in the form of Ca(OH) 2 , CaO or CaCl 2 . NaOH may also be present. The treatment may be effected at 20-40‹ C. in the substantial absence of air for 2 to 10 minutes. The separation of the three phases may be achieved by centrifuging and the protein precipitated by heating or acidifying the protein-containing phase to a pH of 4-9. The aqueous alkaline medium may be made from fresh water or sea water. The starting material is preferably fish or aquatic animals but soy beans may be used.
