1316854 Aircraft escape equipment SAABSCANIA AB 7 July 1970 [7 July 1969] 32864/70 Heading B7G In an aircraft having an ejector seat 5, a device for preventing injury to an airman's arms during ejection comprises arm restraining means 15 which when inoperative allows access of an airman's arm to a space between the ejector seat and the cabin wall, and hence to controls 9-13, and when rendered operative by actuation of the ejector mechanism moves the arm out of the space and prevents such access. The means may take the form of a bag 16, located on a shelf 17 on each side of the cabin, which when inoperative is folded as shown in Fig. 4, but which, when the seat is actuated by means of lever 7, is inflated by pressurised gas released from canister 22 which is punctured by plunger 23, so that the bag assumes the shape illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown) and in dotted outline in Fig. 4. The bag 16 may be internally divided by partitions (29) and is protected by a cover 18 which is permanently secured to the shelf 17 at one end and releasably attached by teasle bands 19 at the other. Alternatively the bag may be inflated by an electrically fired powder cartridge unit (30), Fig. 5, (not shown) from which gases diffuse into the bag through a perforated tube (33). There may further be an inflatable bag (36), Fig. 6, (not shown), to the rear of the space this bag being inflated simultaneously with the side bag (40) but being smaller than that bag and thus inflated more rapidly, so that the airman's arm is forced forwards, then inwards. The material of the inflatable bags may be somewhat permeable so that having been inflated the bags tend to collapse slowly thus reducing friction between the covers 18 and the airman's suit during ejection. The inflatable bags may be divided into separate chambers which are activated at short intervals so that the arm is moved upwards then inwards. As an alternative to an inflatable bag a wide band may be provided, one end of which is wound on a roller driven by means actuated by the ejector means, and the other end of which is releasable attached to a fixed location on the cabin wall, so that on seat ejection the band is drawn taut.
