1283422 Nickel oxide-silica-alumina catalyst ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 6 Oct 1970 [21 Oct 1969] 47456/70 Heading B1E [Also in Division C5] A SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -NiO catalyst containing 1-35 wt % Ni based on the total composition and 1-45 wt % Al 2 O 3 and 99-55 wt % SiO 2 , based on. the weight of silica-alumina. The catalyst is prepared by forming a dispersion of colloidal alumina in an aqueous solution containing a nickel salt and a hydrous silica sol, adding an anion forming a water-insoluble salt with the nickel to precipitate same to give the precipitated nickel salt an aluminasilica gel, decomposing the nickel salt to the oxide and activating by calcining at 800-- 1400‹F for 0.1 to 50 hours. The precipitating anion is suitably carbonate and if this is used, then the decomposition of nickel carbonate to nickel oxide must be carried out under such conditions that all combined carbon oxides are removed. The silica sol is suitably formed by the ion exchange of a silicate solution.
