The starting back pressure reduction equipment for IC engines in submersible armoured vehicles is for otherwise conventional vehicles with a gastight engine compartment (1) separate from the crewspace (16) engine exhaust pipes with non-return flaps (15). At a suitable point in the internal exhaust pipe run (11, 19, 12, 14) openings (21) are provided. fitted with flap valves (20) operated via a lever system (23) by a remotely controlled actuator (22). This should pref. be an electromagnet, wired into the starter circuit but shorted out except when the engine compartment is gastight. The circuit should also include de-energising means for the magnet when the engine has run up.
