A low carbon rimmed steel sheet with superior drawing qualities is made by hot rolling a steel having a ladle analysis of not more than 0.1% C, 0.1-5% Mn, not more than 0.04% S, not more than 0.025% P, the balance being Fe excepting normal amounts of impurities such as Si less than 0.003%, Cu e.g. 0.033% and Sn, to an intermediate gauge, cold rolling to final gauge with 55-80% reduction and box annealing the sheet at 1400-1600 DEG F., preferably followed by a temper rolling, e.g. with 1% reduction. During box annealing, which may be employed for decarburization to produce a sheet or strip having not more than 0.06% C, the sheet is preferably loosely coiled to prevent sticking by indenting or embossing the sheet edges or by winding in the convolutions narrow corrugated metal strips or nylon strands. Prior art methods are described wherein the annealing is in a protective atmosphere at 1100-1400 DEG F.
