Municipal refuse is divided into two portions by sieving and the portion of coarser material is partially burnt and recombined with the portion of finer material, before or after composting of the latter. The partial burning may be effected at 800‹C. for 10 minutes using 0À5 cu. m. of air per kg. of refuse. Large material may then be crushed or removed by sieving. The partly burnt refuse may then be quenched with water to produce a water content of 50%.
