Novel alkenyl silicon compounds of the general formula wherein RSP1/SP is an alkenyl radical, RSP2/SP is an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, cycloalkyl or cycloalkoxy radical or a halogen atom and RSP3/SP and RSP4/SP are tertiary alkyl radicals or a sterically hindered aryl radical or together form a bistertiary alkylene group, are prepared by reacting RSP1/SPRSP2/SPSiRSP5/SPX, where RSP5/SP is a tertiary alkoxy or sterically hindered aryloxy radical or halogen and X is halogen, with a tertiary alcohol or a sterically hindered phenol or, when RSP2/SP and/or RSP5/SP are halogen, with a bis-tertiary alcohol, or with the corresponding alkali metal salts. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an amine to act as a catalyst and/or acidacceptor. When RSP2/SP is halogen, the products may be hydrolysed to the disiloxanes. Examples of starting materials are vinyl, propenyl and allyl chlorosilanes with and without methyl and butoxy substituents; and tert.-butanol and pentanol, pinacol and 2,6-dimethyl phenol. Among the products are vinyl tri-tert.-butoxy and chloro-di-tert.-butoxy silanes, 2-vinyl-2- methyl (and chloro)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-2-siladioxolane and the disiloxane of the formula divinyl tetra-tert.-butoxy (and pentoxy) disiloxanes and allyl and propenyl ditert.-butoxychlorosilanes. Uses.-Forming polymers (see Specification 1,218,408); as a finish on silicates such as glass and sand, water-repellent, release and impregnating agents for minerals, textiles and wood, sizes for glass fibres.
