At least one part of the surface of a normal metal conductor (coating material) which is metallurgically joined to a super conductor is ultrasonically welded to another normal metal conductor (stabilisation material). Preferably the coated superconductor is completely incorporated into the stabilisation material. The superconductor is pref. Nb3Sn coated with Cu, Ag, or Al., Al or Cu being employed as stabilisation materials. The conductors are used to wind super-conducting coils partic. large super-conducting electromagnets. The use of ultrasonic welding improves bonding between the stabilisation metal and the superconductor which leads to good electrical stability in the coils at low temp.
