The methods are for monitoring ultrasonic transmissions, and of receiver and transducer arrangements in simple arrays for detecting faults or irregularities in test pieces, particularly welded joints. The arrangements allow test piece faults to be detected largely independently of quality of coupling between the ultrasonic transducer mounts and the test piece and this represents an improvement on previous equipments. - Two ultrasonic transducers (2a, 2b) are mounted on each prism shaped block (4, 4A) so that one (2a) faces the interface with the test piece directly and the other obliquely.
