Waste waters containing dissolved saturated and/or unsaturated ketones or aldehydes and/or unsaturated alcohols are hydrogenated before charging to biological purification plants in order to prevent presence or formation of cpds. which inhibit decomposition activity of microorganisms. - E.g. waste water containing inter alia 3-ketobutanol-1, methylvinyl ketone, methylbutenol and HCHO is hydrogenated, using Ni-Cu-Mn catalyst at 240 degrees C and 300 atm. H2. Filtered solution is separated into aqs. phase with carbonyl no. 1, iodine no. 0 and 2.54 wt.% C, which is further diluted in 1:20 ratio and charged to biological purification plant, and (b) organic phase which is burnt.
