Vibration in the tubes of a nuclear reactor is studied by an electrical installation in which a frequency generator feeds the primary coils of two identical transformers. One is a reference and the second a detector and is encased in resin to protect it. The currents generated in the secondary of the detector are affected by the separation between the detector and the tubes and the phase changes produced are amplified to provide a measurement of the vibration. This system has a variable gain and threshold over wide limits.
