A tunnel kiln for firing bricks or tiles, having preheating, firing and first and second cooling zones, is constructed from prefabricated units which may be varied in number to vary the length of the kiln, each zone comprising at least one unit. Each unit, of laminar construction, is formed of a material which will resist the mechanical, thermal and chemical stresses of the zone of which it forms at least a part, the ceiling sections in the firing zone having an internal fireproof material layer and in the cooling zones being formed of lightweight heatproof material. Waste gas flues made from standardized prefabricated parts are provided within the kiln. The weight of the ceiling sections may be partly taken by metallic or non-metallic supporting elements such as asbestos cement pipes. The various parts forming the kiln are interconnected by ceramic pins. Concrete members covered with a mineral fibre layer may be used in the construction.
