EXTRUSION DISCHARGING AND MANDREL RETURNING APPARATUS FOR VERTICAL EXTRUSION PRESSES

An extrusion press 18 has a device 25 to receive a mandrel and any extrusion discard from the press and to separate them before lifting the mandrel to a position where the mandrel is ejected down a channel 22 to return it to the press. The mandrel and discard are ejected from the press down a channel 19 and received in a sheath (28), Fig. 2 (not shown), on the device. The discard falls on to a fixed deflector plate 33 and into an outlet channel 34. The device 25 is raised and lowered by a rope 24. A buffer (29) on the device is normally at the end of the sheath to stop the mandrel and pivots about roller (27) away from the sheath end by the co-operation of a roller (30) and a guide 21 at the upper position of the device 25 to bring a guide 31 into alignment with the sheath. A buffer 32 on a fixed stand 20 is positioned behind the buffer (29) in the lowest position of the device. A plate 35 on the end of the channel 22 allows a mandrel to move into the press when required.
