[Also in Division G1] Documents e.g. football pool coupons or order forms, bearing pre-printed data in one colour and manually applied marks in another colour are sensed by an arrangement which is made effective to sense first one colour, then the other so as to read the two data areas successively. In one embodiment, preprinted timing marks are sensed by a photo-cell 14 which supplies pulses to a counter 20, and decoder 21 provides an output to set and reset bi-stable store 22 controlling the power supply to groups of data sensing photo-cells 13, 15. Cells 14, 15 may respond to preprinted red marks and cell 13 then responds to non-red marks. In another embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), a single group of data sensing cells is used and the output of store 22 controls a solenoid for inserting a filter in the light path to the photo-cells.
