Apparatus for plotting isograms comprises a market 14 moved over a surface 15 in correspondence with the movement of a voltage probe 13 over the surface 11, for which voltage isograms are to be plotted, the marker 14 being operated by a solenoid 18 to make a mark on the surface 15 whenever a detector 16 coupled to the probe 13 senses a desired voltage value selected by adjusting a selector 17 associated with the detector 16. The apparatus can be used to plot isograms for the surface distribution of any variable parameter which can be represented by a surface distribution of electrical potential and, in particular, to plot thermal isograms for any particular cross-section of a die with cooling holes by simulating the crosssection under examination with a sheet of conductive paper, painting thereon the shape of the cross-section of a cooling hole with silver paint and applying voltages at two points proportional to the temperatures measured at those points.
