1,223,369. Pulverulent fuel burners. SIEMENS A.G. 14 July, 1969 [13 July, 1968], No. 35417/69. Heading F4T. In order to atomize a mixture 2 of coal dust and water the mixture 2, is fed into a container 1 and caused to issue from a constricted outlet 5 of the container 1 at a pressure of several atmospheres, the mixture 2 being heated, just before it issues from the outlet 5, to a temperature just below the water vaporization temperature corresponding to the pressure produced upstream of the outlet 5, so that the water on expanding is vaporized immediately after issuing from the outlet 5 after which the coal dust is burned. As shown in Fig. 1, the container 1 is elongate and is surrounded by an electrical heating device 3 to heat the mixture 2 as it is fed along the container 1 to a closure wall 4 at one end of the container, which wall 4 is formed with a hole which is intersected by the longitudinal axis of the container 1 and constitutes the outlet 5. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the mixture 2 is heated by a flow of steam in a jacket (7) which flow is countercurrent to the flow of the mixture 2 as it moves along the container 1 to a closure wall (9), the outlet (10) of the container 1 being constituted by radial holes through the side of the container 1 adjacent the closure wall (10). The sudden expansion and vaporization of the water immediately downstream of the outlet causes great turbulence to thereby disperse the coal dust into a state suitable for burning, and this turbulence may be increased by a device for producing a spinning effect arranged in the container upstream of the outlet. The heat produced by the burning of the coal dust may be used to generate electricity through the intermediary of a steam turbine.
