Pulpwood is separated by the action of a vibratory table 1 and transferred to a first conveyer 6, there being a sensor 13 controlling the conveyer 6 in response to the amount of pulpwood being fed on to a second conveyer 11. A rotary member 3 feeds the wood from the table 1 to a guide 9 leading to the conveyer 6. A sensor 10 controls the drive of a motor 5 of the member 3 in response to the amount of wood on the guide 9. The sensor 13 comprises a switch which energizes a solenoid 17 to disengage a pawl 14 in the drive of the conveyer 6.
