A level comprising a chamber 2 in which is visible a bubble 5 in a liquid 4 is provided with a body 1 of transparent synthetic plastics material having at least one surface 11 which is convex both longitudinally and transversely of the level and through which the bubble can be seen. The body 1 may be generally parallelepiped in shape and provided with lenticular upper and side surfaces. Alternatively the body 1 may be round in which case it is provided with convex side surfaces and the level acts as a plumb level.
