An electric drive for a drilling rig winch includes an asynchronous motor having at least two arcuate stators 7 and a rotor 6 serving also as a flywheel of an electromagnetic clutch having an armature 4 capable of rotating in both rotary directions and adapted to be mechanically connected to the winch drum 1. The arcuate stators are supplied with 3-phase current from diesel-driven generators 13, as shown, or from a mains supply. The armature 4 is connected to the drum 1 through gearing 3 and a pneumatic tyre clutch 2. During lowering of tools in a drilled hole the clutch field 5 is initially disconnected from its exciter 14 and the armature 4 rotates freely with the drum 1. At a predetermined speed of the drum the field 5 is energized and applies a reverse torque on the armature 4, so slowing down the drum 1. Control of the exciting current in field 5 permits stopping of the drum or even reverse rotation to raise the tools. The exciter 14 is driven through a belt 15 by the shaft of the flywheel. Tachogenerators 19 on the shafts of the armature 4 and flywheel 6 control the switching in and out of circuit of resistors 16 in the circuit of the armature 4. During sinking of a well the clutch 2 is disengaged and the output of the exciter 14 is supplied to a D.C. motor 20 driving the drum 1 through a belt 22 and a pneumatic tyre clutch 23.
