1,250,574. Tool changers; boring machines. LUDWIGSBURGER MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. 30 May, 1969 [1 June, 1968], No. 27480/69. Headings B3B and B3C. A programme controlled machine tool includes a headstock 24 movable on a base; a tool conveyer mechanism comprising an endless conveyer; a tool selection device mounted on the headstock for movement therewith, the said device including drive means for moving the conveyer relative to the headstock to bring a selected tool to a transfer position; detecting means to detect when a selected tool is in the transfer position, and a looking device to lock the conveyer and headstock against relative movement when the selected tool is in the transfer position; transfer means to transfer the selected tool from the transfer position to the tool holding spindle; and fine adjustment means allowing relative movement between a part of the conveyer carrying the tools and the remainder of the conveyer after the selected tool has been detected to enable the selected tool to be accurately positioned in the transfer position before the locking device locks the said part and headstock against relative movement, the drive means including means to prevent relative movement between the headstock and the said remainder of the conveyer. The headstock 24 is movable vertically along a column 10, a chain conveyer 30 carrying tools 42 in carrier 36 is mounted on the side of the column 10 and its driving mechanism 48 is mounted in a housing 50 on the side of the headstock 24. The driving mechanism 48 operates through an irreversible worm drive 56 and sprocket to a drive chain 52 so that when switched off the sprocket acts as a drive member to move the chain 52, and hence the chain conveyer 30, in synchronism with movement of the headstock. To move the chain conveyer 30 relative to the headstock 24 during movement of same, the driving mechanism 48 is activated. The drive from the chain 52 to the conveyer 30 passes through a disengageable reduction gear 54 to ensure that the speed of the chain conveyer is the same as the speed of the headstock when the driving mechanism 48 is switched off. The tools 42 are held in holders having coded rings engaged by elements to enable a required tool to be selected by the programme control means for transfer to the spindle 26 by a transfer device (not shown). At a required position the chain conveyer 30 is locked by a locking pin operated by a device 46, the locking pin having a tapered end and the chain conveyer 30 being allowed to move relative to the chain 52 to facilitate the fine adjustment.
