1,038,130. Opening containers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Aug. 7, 1964 [Feb. 18, 1964], No. 32324/64. Heading B8D. The end wall of a can which may be opened by means of a tear tab 20 riveted to a removable portion 17, is formed with an inward rib 21, which acts to absorb the excess metal produced on scoring a line 18, surrounding the portion 17, whereby the rib prevents the can end from bulging. In a modification the rib 21 has two upright walls, Fig. 5 (not shown); and it may project outwards from the surface of the can end, Fig. 6 (not shown). The rib may be divided into short portions on circumferentially opposite sides of the portion 17. There may be two concentric reinforcing ribs projecting either outwards, Figs. 7-8 (not shown), or inwards, Fig. 9 (not shown), of the can. Instead of being of C-shape in plan view, the rib may be fully circular, Figs. 10-15 (not shown), either single or double.
