In a spinneret each orifice 2, whether of circular or other cross-section, in a spinneret plate 1 is surrounded by a groove 3 so as to define a protruding wall surrounding the orifice, the surface of the wall 6 enclosing, with the surface 5 of the orifice, an acute angle , preferably less than 45 degrees, the apex of the angle producing a knife-edged rim 7 located upstream of or in the plane of (Figs. 2 and 1, respectively) the melt outflow surface 4 of the spinneret plate. Thus there is no part of the outflow surface of the spinneret plate adjacent to the orifice to which material from the melt "jet" can adhere.
