Modified polymers consist of homo- or copolymers of olefins and diolefins, and unsatd. cpds. contg. a polar gp. selected from -COOH, -COOR, -CN, -CONH2, SO3H, and -CH2Cl (where R is alkyl or aryl). They have a strength in the unvulcanized state comparable or superior to that of natural rubber. The polymers e.g. modified polyisoprene can be easily vulcanised with the usual vulcanising agents. The unsatd. cpd. has the formula (I), (II) or (III): (where X1 - X4 are each H, -COOH, -COOR, -CN-, -CHO, - CONH2, -SO3H, - CH2Cl, but at leat one gp. is not H, and in (I), the cis substituents may together form a ring) and is reacted with the olefin or diolefin polymer at 40 - 200 degrees C in the presence of an antioxidant.
