Metallurgical coke of good mechanical strength from coal contg. less than 80 wt.% carbon by (a) mixing the ground dried coal with at least 7% (based on total weight) of an asphaltic binder (softening point below 60 degrees C), (b) briquetting at below 270 degrees c, (c) cooking by raising the temperature by 55-346 degrees C per hour until the temperature reaches about 590 degrees C, and (d) finishing coking at higher temperature.
