Cyano cpds. are removed from gases which may contain other combustible components by passing the gases in the presence of oxygen at a temp. capable of initiating catalytic combustion under practically adiabatic conditions over a catalyst consisting of Al2O3-supported Pd. The gases are passed into the catalyst bed at 150-300 degrees C, and the temp. of the gases inthe catalyst bed is held at 500-700 degrees C by controlling the colorific value of the gases. Esp. useful for treating the waste from the prepn. of acrylonitrile from propylene, ammonia and oxygen. The treatment efficiently and economically converts the waste gases contg. cyano cpds. into a mixt. of nitrogen monoxides, carbon dioxide and water. This mixt. can be passed into the atmosphere.
