1318019 Removing gases in industrial processes RHEINSTAHL AG 31 Dec 1971 [2 Jan 1971] 61034/71 Heading F4X Apparatus for removing exhaust gases from an electric arc furnace 1 having a removable cover 2 comprises a suction hood 5 arranged above the path 6 of a crane (7, Fig. 1) used for charging the furnace, and a pivotable suction discharge pipe 4 which, during melting operations communicates with the furnace interior via a union 3 secured to the cover 2 as shown and during charging and tapping operations is swung away from the furnace (see Figs. 1 and 3). The discharge pipe 4 and suction hood 5 are connected by conduits 8 and 9 respectively to a common pipe 10 leading to a suction fan and a dust extraction installation. Each of the conduits 8, 9 contains a shut-off valve 11, 12 operated by a pivoting device 13 which serves to (a) close valve 12 and open valve 11 when the discharge pipe 4 is swung away from the furnace, suction then being effected only through the hood 5 and (b) close or almost close valve 11 and open valve 12 when the discharge pipe 4 communicates with the furnace interior.
