Prepn. of alkyltin halides (I):- Sn + RX catalyst RmSnX4-m (I) R = 1-12 C alkyl or cycloalkyl X = Cl, Br or I m = 1, 2 or 3. Catalyst is (a) N- or P-contng. organic cpd., NH3, N2H4, NH2OH or salts thereof and (b) iodine or an iodine-contng. cpd. High yields and selective reaction; (I) are known intermediates, toxicants, germicides, resin stabilisers etc. Sn usually as foil or granules. Catalysts include amines, NH4 salts, R'R2R3P, R1R2R3PO, R1R2R3PS or R1R2R3R4P+Y- (R1-R4 = H, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio, arylthio, alkylamino, dialkylamino, OH or halogen; Y = Cl, Br or I). Used together with iodine, inorganic or organic iodides. Usually 0.003-0.3 mole (a) and at least 0.01 mole (b) used per g.-atom Sn. Ratio RX : Sn of 2-3:1 suitable at 100-200 deg. for 2-4 hrs.
