1340364 Purifying sewage H P HEFERMEHL SA 12 Jan 1971 [13 Jan 1970] 1527/71 Heading C1C A process for treating biologically degradable organic material comprises treating the material in an aerobic stage inoculated with a bacterial culture and elevating the temperature in the said stage towards the optimum temperature for activity of the bacterial culture by the introduction of hot gas, e.g. steam. In a sewage treating apparatus hot air and steam from drier 18 in which sludge separated in filter 4 is dried, is injected into aeration tank 20 by injectors 22. Tank 20 is inoculated periodically or continuously with cultures of micro-organisms. The apparatus may be thermostatically controlled. The supernatant liquid from filter 4 may have its pH adjusted and may be treated with precipitants and flocculants before or in flotation tank 6. The materials which may be added to the liquid include polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polyacrylamides, polyethylene oxides, polyamines, copolymers of vinyl acetate or styrene with maleic anhydride, sulphuric acid and aluminium sulphate. Sewage may be passed into tank 20 through the injectors 22.
