Cell for the manufacture of aluminium by electrolytic reduction of alumina in a bath of molten cryolite, particularly in a high output battery, comprising a rectangular vessel lined internally, at least in part, with an electrically conducting coating acting as cathode during the reduction, collecting bars in the lining for conducting the current to the external busbars, the relative resistance of the lining and the siting and resistance of the collecting bars being so adjusted that, in certain regions at least, the current density of the current passing through the surface of such a region is inversely proportional to the vertical magnetic flux density in that region.
