[Also in Division B8] A pair of oppositely rotating carriers 34, 35 have pairs of opposed retractably mounted outwardly biased gripping and sealing elements 51, 52 which register and grip opposed plies of flexible material 18 between them and transversely seal the plies by heat and/or pressure while advancing them between the carriers. In the embodiment described, there is a conventional filling apparatus 14 with a funnel 26 and a device 24 which forms the material 18 which is heat sealable into a tube which is sealed longitudinally by a heating element 28 pivotally mounted at 30. Wheels 34, 35 are mounted on shafts 32, 33 driven by a motor (36), Fig. 6 (not shown), through gears (38). Each wheel has non- radially directed bores (40), Fig. 4 (not shown), with liners (42) and opposed pairs of slots (44). An outwardly spring-biased reciprocating arm 46 is mounted in each bore (40), its movement being limited by pins (48) engaging the slots 44. The sealing elements 51, 52 are pivotally mounted at the ends of the arms 46, the pivotal movement being limited by stops (55) engaging an adjustable stop (55a). Springs (56) ensure mutual parallel orientation of the operational faces (58) of the sealing elements 51, 52 when they engage. Each sealing face (58) has a knife slot 60 in which is a spring-biased pivotal knife (64), Fig. 5 (not shown). One end of each knife (64) projects from the element 51 to engage a cam 76 which deflects the knife to sever a transverse seal along its centre. Each sealing element 51, 52 has an electric heater (68), the temperature of which is controlled by a thermostatic switch (74). The spacing between the wheels 34, 35 may be altered to produce packages of different size and the numbers of pairs of elements 51, 52 may be varied. Two rolls of heat-sealable material 18 may be used to form the tube.
