When the inner wall of a recess 12 is temporary, i.e. when steel combs (50) are used, the edges of the latter are formed to receive the broadened end of an intercell partition (51), Fig. 7 (not shown), but leaving a gap to form a fillet (56) of Pb for sealing the partition. The edge of the intercell partition may be grooved or corrugated so that sealing ribs are formed when the intercell connector is cast.
