Title cpds. of formula (I): (where R1 is Cl or Br and R2 is H, lower alkyl or lower aryl) are prepd. by reducing an aldehyde of formula: (I); CHR-OH is CHO with either NaBH4 or with alkylor arylmagnesium halides using a Grignard reaction in ether, benzene or xylene. The reduction with sodium borohydride is almost quantitative.
