Fibre-forming compsn. with rased hot wet-modulus and affinity for basic dyes consists of a polymer substrate (I) contng. =85 wt.% acrylonitrile and a polymer material (II) grafted on (I) of formula:- -(CHR-CR1(COOR2))-n (where R is H or Me, R1 is R or Et, R2 is 1-5C alkyl and n 10 and esp. R and R1 are H and R2 is Me, Et or isopropyl). (I) may be polyacrylonitrile and/or a copolymer of acrylonitrile with a vinyl halide, esp. vinyl chloride or -bromide and/or vinylidene chloride. (II) may also be a copolymer of formula:- CHR-CR1(COOR2) n CH2-CR3(R4SO3M) y (where R3 is R or CN, R4 is lower alkylene, phenylene, -CH2-O-C6H4-, -CO-NH-C6H4 or -COO-C6H4-, M is H, a mono- of divalent salt forming component, y 1), but is esp. methyl acrylate.
