1279706 Disc brakes; automatic wear adjustment; slave cylinders GIRLING Ltd 5 Aug 1970 [12 Aug 1969] 40157/69 Headings F2E and F2F In a spot-type disc brake the friction pads are applied by oppositely acting pistons 12, 14 working in a double ended hydraulic cylinder 10 the piston 12 acting directly on one friction pad and the piston 14 acting on a yoke 15 which extends across the disc and the piston 14 has fixed therein a pin 16 screw-threaded with a multi-start thread and in engagement with a nut member 19 which is loaded torsionally by a spring 20 acting to rotate the nut member 19 towards the piston 14 and the nut member 19 is formed with ratchet teeth co-operating with complementary teeth 25 on a sleeve 26 which is axially movable in an axial bore 27 in the piston 14 and held against rotation by a pin 30. Wear of the friction pads will cause increased separation of the pistons 12, 14 in application of the brake and this will result in teeth 24 riding over teeth 25: if the wear is sufficient to cause the teeth 24 to ride over teeth 25 to the extent of one tooth spacing the piston 14 will be permanently moved away from piston 12 and the brake adjusted. The brake is also appliable mechanically by means of a cam 35 mounted in a transverse bore in the second piston 14 which acts through a tappet 36 on the sleeve 26 which is moved axially and acts through the nut member 19 and pin 16 on the piston 12.
