Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons e.g., xylene, and formaldehyde are simultaneously removed from air effluents by passing through activated carbon contg. water. The carbon is charged with water pref. to around 25% water content. After use it is desorbed by steam and the liquid hydrocarbons separated from the aq. condensate. The regenerated carbon bed may be used again without drying or cooling. Both substances are removed in a single, simple operation and the formaldehyde content of the air is reduced to a lower level than by separate water absorption.
