Device for cleaning water contaminated with hydrocarbons has first reactor vessel in the form of a packed column through which fresh air is passed in contraflow to the water being cleaned, and from which a vent pipe leads to a biological reactor in which the exhaust air from the first reactor comes into contact with microorganisms which absorb the hydrocarbons. The second reactor is provided with a system for removing the purified air. The first reactor has an upper inlet for the contaminated water, and a removal system in its floor for the purified water. The second reactor may be filled with a biological filter material such as compost or peat. Alternatively, the second column may be in the form of a packed column provided with an upper inlet for a biological nutrient material, the exhaust air from the first reactor entering it from below. A removal system for excess sludge is provided at the base of this packed column. The biological nutrient may be circulated between the reactor and a system for treating used nutrient and adding fresh nutrient. The nutrient is distributed by a sprinkler arrangement in the second reactor, and the packing material is in the form of plastic shapes. The used nutrient may be treated in a clarification procedure, from which the sludge is disposed of together with the sludge from the second reactor itself.
