The material has reduced back-scatter characteristics and is based on a central layer of lead plate or foil coated on both faces with bitumen. The bitumen layer nearest to the X-ray sources carries an outer layer of material with a low atomic number esp. of Al. For ease of application, either the rear layer of bitumen or the front layer of Al may be coated with an adhesive covered in turn with a tear-off protective film. For sealing the joints between adjacent panels or strips, a narrow laminated strip of the same layers is used, the front layer of Al in this case being wider than the remaining layers and coated on the rear face of the protruding skirts with an adhesive layer.
