The surface hardness tester comprises an adjustable support table (7a) which allows the test piece to be orientated under the probe (1). By this means a series of hardness readings can be obtained for determination of the molecular structure of anisotropic materials. The support point (7a) is fixed but a supporting table with central aperture aligned directly over the pillar allows the specimen to be moved in all directions. A light source (4) illuminates the point of depression via an infrared filter (3) and fibre optic light guide (2). A lens (8) focusses the profile onto a ground-glass or matt screen.
