In the embodiment described, the sample container is rectangular in cross-section and has an integral identification tag projecting from its lower end or laterally therefrom. The code marking, for example a binary punched code marking, may be applied to the tag by a tool 2 from an identity disc 1. Alternatively the tool may constitute the identity disc and have pins arranged according to the code and which serve to punch the code directly on the tag.
