Nitrogen oxides (esp. NO) substantially accelerate the thermal decomposition of carbonyls of nickel and iron. The process is carried out at 230-290 degrees C. Products with low carbon content can be obtained. Depending on the conditions, irregular, hemispheroidal or spheroidal particles are obtained (the latter at about 290 degrees C). The nitrogen content of the metal powder is at least 0.01%.
