Nickel is separated from cobalt in ammoniacal soln. by (a) allowing one of the commercially available liquid ion exchangers "LIX64", "LIX64N" or "LIX63" (RTM) to flow as a organic phase into teh ammoniacal soln. (b)extracting nickel out of the ammoniacal soln. into the organic phase, and (c) separating nickel from the organic phase by acid. Used for separating nickel from cobalt derived from mineral lumps from the sea-bed, or other ores. Nickel is obtained in hig yields from cobalt-nickel mixtures. The method is less complicated than known processes. The org. phase constis of "LIX64" dissolved in a liquid petroleum product, pref. a refined petroleumsuch as "Napoleum" (RTM) or "Saco Sol 175" (RTM). The petroleum product may also contain isodecanol.
