Heavy gauge laminated metal walls - made from consumable electrode weld joined inner and outer plate sections

Solid laminated cylindrical arc shaped or spherical metal walls are produced by placing two pre-formed outer layer portions adjacent to each other leaving a gap which is closed at the bottom and if need be on the sides by suitably shaped pieces of metal strip, following which a consumable electrode made up from a several plates and fitted with vertical channels for wire is wedged into the resultant space so that the two sections can be welded together into one solid piece by a bath formed by the melting electrode and the wire addition. The method is used in the manufacture of chemical plant and pressure vessels with thick walls and avoids the difficulties connected with the bending etc. of thick plates.
