[Also in Divisions B5 and C3] Sheets, paper, wires, screens, fibres, fabrics, foams, or solid or microporous objects, made of glass, ceramics, bricks, concrete, Cu, Al, steel, brass, wood, cellulosic materials, wool, polyamide, polyester, polyacrylonitrile, polyolefin, polyvinyl halide, cured epoxy resin, or cured aldehyde-urea resin, are coated with a dope which consists essentially of (I) poly (pbenzamide) containing recurring units (II) LiCl or CaCl 2 , and (III) an amide or urea medium. The dope may be made mixing (I) (II) and (III); or it may be made by polymerizing in situ p-aminobenzoyl chloride hydrochloride at below 60‹C, e.g. -15‹ to +30‹C in medium (III), and adding (II) or a substance from which (II) is formed. (III) may be where R is methyl, ethyl or n-propyl, R 1 and R 2 are methyl or ethyl, R 3 is tritetra-, or pentamethylene; R 4 is tetra- or pentamethylene; and R 5 is di- or trimethylene. The dope contains #4 wt% (I), which is of high MW and is homopolymeric, having inherent viscosity 0.7 and peak height ratio #0.86; and #2 wt% (II), e.g. 8%. (II) may be Li 2 CO 3 , Li 2 O, LiOH, LiOH.H 2 O, LiH, CaO, Ca(OH) 2 and/or CaH 2 , which neutralizes acid by-product. In the polymerization process may be employed chain terminators, e.g. p-aminobenzoic acid, ammonia, monoamines, N, N'-dialkylethylenediamine alcohols, phenol, water, acetyl chloride, acetic, pyromellitic, or phthalic anhydride, isocyanates, di-isocyanates, phthaloyl chlorides, sebacyl chloride, biphenyldisulphonyl chloride, or dihydrazides. (I) preferably has crystallinity index 50 and particle size 1-20Ám. Also present in the dope may be H 2 O, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, benzene, acetonitrile, acid by-product, dyes, fillers, delustrants U.V. stabilizers, or antioxidants. The dope may contain isotropic and/or anisotropic phases.
