A ball or roller bearing has at least one of its races, or a member located adjacent one of its races, hollow, filled with a high thermal conductivity coolant and provided with cooling fins. In an embodiment a ball bearing 10, Fig. 1, has an inner race 13 mounted on a member 15 having a cavity 29 filled with coolant 30 such as sodium. The bearing is clamped between a shoulder 22 formed on the member 15 and a nut 23 screwed on to said member 15. The latter is provided with outwardly-directed fins 35. In modifications the inner race of a ball bearing is a groove 41, Fig. 2, formed in a hollow member 40, and both the inner and outer races are hollow, filled with coolant and may be provided with axially-directed fins 63, Fig. 3.
