METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR SEATING A BEAD OF A TUBELESS TIRE ON A BEAD SEAT OF A VEHICLE WHEEL

A tubeless tyre 16, Fig. 2, assembled on a wheel rim 20 is partially inflated in the horizontal position by directing a ring-shaped inwardly flowing stream of air through the space between bead 38 and bead seat 26. As shown compressed air is supplied to an annular ring 10 supported on the uppermost sidewall and provided with circumferentially-spaced holes 12 positioned to direct the air through the gap between bead 38 and adjacent bead seat 26. Bead 38 rises until it abuts the seat, whereafter inflation is continued through the usual rim-mounted valve 40, until both beads are fully seated. The air to the ring may be supplied from a reservoir 46. The ring may have blanked ends the spacing between which is adjustable to vary the diameter of the ring to suit tyres of different diameters. The ring may be of circular, oval or triangular crosssection.
