The spiral surrounds a spindle 16 and is determined by pins (not shown) or grooves 17. The length of the strip 1 entering the combustion chamber is measured by a device 13 which counts regular perforations provided in the strip. At a predetermined figure further entry of the strip is prevented. The slot through which the strip enters into the combustion chamber is sealed for firing by the strip itself or by a knife which severs the strip from the main body. The slot has variable dimensions to suit the strip. The strip in the combustion chamber is ignited by a priming cap, an electric spark, an ignited combustible liquid, or a combustible vapour ignited by a spark or compression. The liquid or vapour is fed into the combustion chamber by forming the spindle 16 and pins for determining the spiral, as hollow tubes.
