1294194 Stripping wire GARDNERS TRANSFORMERS Ltd 2 Feb 1970 4848/70 Heading H2C To remove an insulating enamel type wire coating a conductor is heated in an inert or reducing gas atmosphere to a temperature at which the chemical composition of the insulation breaks down, then cooled in an inert or reducing gas atmosphere to below the temperature at which rapid oxidation occurs. The gas may be nitrogen and the heat may be supplied by a flame directed onto an open ended metal tube containing the conductor in the gas, or by electrical heating using the tube as the load for the secondary winding of a transformer. A curtain of cold gas directed past the open end of the tube cools the conductor as it is withdrawn. Alternatively, the conductor may be heated and cooled by streams of hot and cold nitrogen, using three streams with the hot one in the centre, or two concentric streams with the cold annular stream surrounding the hot one. After treatment the conductor may be wiped clean ready for soldering. The apparatus may be modified to provide a hand held trigger-operated device, the trigger operating both the heating and the gas flow.
