The generator shown is a vehicle alternator mounted on a support 28 and having a conductive casing 24 with an electrode 22 mounted on but insulated from the casing, so that when water reaches the level of the electrode, a current flow between the electrode and casing turns on a transistor 31 which in turn switches off a further transistor 35 and so opens a switch S in series with the field winding 10 and de-energizes a relay 37 whose contacts 37a open to disconnect the output rectifier R from the supply battery 19. The switch S may also be operated by an overvoltage sensor 20 and may be a transistor, thyristor or electromechanically operated switch.
