1401244 Modified polyaminopolyamides HERCULES Inc 10 Aug 1972 [12 Aug 1971] 37449/72 Heading C3R A process for producing a water-soluble resin comprises alkylating 75 to 100% of the secondary amine groups of a polyaminopolyamide derived by reaction of a dicarboxylic acid and a polyamine H 2 NC n H 2n (NHC n H 2n ) x NH 2 (n being 2 to 6 and x 1 to 4), to obtain an alkylated polyaminopolyamide containing tertiary amine groups; adding 0À10 to 0À33 moles epichlorohydrin per mole of amine nitrogen to the alkylated polyaminopolyamide in an aqueous medium, and heating at 30 to 90‹ C. till substantially all the epichlorohydrin has reacted. Various dicarboxylic acids, anhydrides or esters, polyamines and alkylating agents are specified: in the examples alkylation is effected with formic acid and formaldehyde or dimethyl sulphate and the dicarboxylic acid is adipic, sebacic or itaconic. Uses.-The resin is stated to be particularly useful as the adhesive in a process for creping paper wherein the paper is adhered to a drum driven by means of an adhesive and then separated therefrom. Reference is made to "blade creping" and "roll creping" techniques. The resin is stated to impart little if any wet-strength to the paper.
