Mfr. of pitch from petroleum feedstocks by (A) catalytically cracking at over 400 degrees C in presence of a solid porous catalyst, (B) fractionating to remove the part boiling below 290 degrees C (C) visbreaking the residues so that the fraction boiling above 400 degrees C has a content of sat. constituents of 12% max. (D) fractioning to remove the part boiling below 370 degrees C. and (E) blowing the residue at 400-455 degrees C with air at 1.07-5.35 l/min./l. with an average dwell time of less than 1 h.
